  • Singapore City Tour - Duxton Hill to Chinatown
Join me for a walk from Tanjong Pagar Conservation Area to Chinatown. We will pass by beautifully restored and conserved shophouses. These shophouses cost upwards of S$12.5 million each.
We will walk by Duxton Hill, Tanjong Pagar, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Ann Siang Hill, Club Street and Mohamed Ali Lane in Chinatown. Along the way, we will see Chinatown's newest wall mural (2024). This Samsui Woman Mural is controversial and has attracted a lot of attention, online debates and coffeeshop talks. Thank you for walking with me 😀
Link to a news and social media articles on the controversial mural is below:

As an overseas SGean who only goes back every few years or so, it's lovely to go on these virtual walks whenever I feel homesick, thanks!

The new Chinatown Mural stoked a controversy that is heating up in Singapore. Smoking is actively discouraged and the huge mural shows a Samsui Woman smoking. Authorities wants the cigarette to be removed from the mural. But the general public overwhelmingly want the mural to stay unchanged. Authorities are having a headache now as this is election year in Singapore. This mural is a work of art and I like the mural to stay too.

I wanted to quickly record the Samsui Woman having her smoke break before URA takes the cigarette away. Haha! I really hope that the mural can remain as it is now. This is part of Singapore's history.

Duxton Hill is a place where shophouses stand like sentinels of grace and elegance, and each facade telling a story.
Your video camera walks slowly and politely, capturing the artistic architecture, whispers of history and the bustle of modernity along Tanjong Pagar Road. As you proceed down the street, you reach the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a sanctuary of tranquility where the heartbeat of the city takes a pause.
Further along, you zoom in on the murals that are a topic of online discussions on Erskine Road.
Passing through the quiet Club Street, you encounter the murals of Yip Yew Chong.
We experienced a walk through the diverse area with immersive video footage!☝️🌟

Yosh and Iku, you are so observant and poetic. You described this walk so beautifully. Great effort has been made to conserve these old shophouses. They are so beautiful now, each with their own uniqueness.
The debates on the Samsui Woman Mural is a hot topic now. Since this is election year in Singapore, I expect the authorities to exercise discretion and gracefully allow the mural to stay. Hope I am right.

i have a fond memory of staying at a hotel in Duxton Hill close to the Tanjong Pagar MRT station. it was previously managed by the Berjaya Hotels Group followed by the Six Senses until 2020 and currently the Mariott Group in the form of the Duxton Reserve hotel. nowadays, Duxton Hill is directly connected to the Maxell MRT station along the brown TEL line, making access much more convenient than taking the Tanjong Pagar one.
i heard that the samsui women mural at erskine lane has sparked some controversies because of the lady holding a cigarette. there is a video where Kim Huat portrayed by mrbrown expressing his comical opinions on that mural.
murals painted on buildings have become an increasing trend worldwide. may I know who is the artist doing the murals at Ann Siang hill? anyways, Yip Yew Chong always paints several beautiful murals like the one at Mohammad Ali Lane. you can see his mural featured on hoardings for the Founders' Memorial project at Bay East Garden one day.

The authorities have done a great job gazetting and preserving these old shop houses along this video route and many other places. Prices have shot up to the tens of millions and the big fishes are scooping up these shophouses as investment assets.
The Samsui Woman Mural is neither promoting nor encouraging smoking. It's artwork depicting the past. Controversy is good for business. Now people hear of Sean Dunston, the previously unknown artist based in Singapore. People also know that Ya Kun Kaya Toast has a shop there. Information about Sean Dunston is in this link
